Charming, hilarious, and chock-full of snark, Aisha Tyler’s Self-Inflicted Wounds is one part memoir, one part advice book, and one part stand-up comedy show.  Tyler, who describes herself as a nerd growing up, takes the reader from her adventurous childhood to her path to becoming a comedian through a series of stories about the mistakes she made that incidentally led her to her current success.  Tyler uses these stories to demonstrate that more often than not we “do it to ourselves,” but it is possible to bounce back and learn important lessons from failing brilliantly.

With each story that Tyler recalls in the book, you’ll feel as though it is you and her in your living room with a bottle of wine sharing laughs about the time she almost burned her house down as a child trying to make french fries, or the very first time she performed stand-up comedy.  Tyler invites the reader into her collective memory, and as we get the the real meat of the story, we learn how the ivy league college graduate makes the transition to stand-up comedy.

If you are looking for a bit of creative inspiration, or a not-so-gentle nudge to keep pursuing your passion, this is it.  Self-Inflicted Wounds quite passionately demonstrates the resillence of the human spirit, and does so with laugh after laugh.
